Genuine Swedish Reindeer Hide

Reindeer hide is widely regarded as one of the finest natural materials available for use beneath the saddle, valued for its exceptional cushioning, comfort, and pressure-distributing properties.

Published research has demonstrated that reindeer hide saddle pads can significantly reduce peak saddle forces and improve pressure distribution beneath a correctly fitting saddle. The unique structure of the hide helps distribute weight more evenly across the horse’s back, making it a popular choice for riders seeking enhanced comfort and back protection.

The hairs of the reindeer hide are naturally hollow and filled with air, creating an insulating layer with remarkable pressure-equalising capabilities. Wonderfully soft against the horse’s skin, reindeer hide helps provide warmth, protection, and comfort while reducing friction and the risk of rubbing. These properties make it particularly suitable for sensitive horses, thin-skinned horses, horses with challenging saddle fitting requirements, and horses lacking topline musculature.

No two hides are exactly alike. Each beautiful hide varies naturally in colour and pattern, ranging from light beige and brown tones through to grey-brown and white. These premium-quality Swedish reindeer hides are naturally tanned in Sweden and sourced from reindeer raised in Sweden.

As a natural product, each hide is unique in its size, shape, colour, and markings. Cosmetic imperfections such as small tears in the fur, repairs, tanning marks, natural colour markings, trimmed edges, or small holes on the underside may be present. These characteristics are normal and reflect the authenticity of the product.

Please note that all reindeer hides naturally shed hair over time, regardless of tanning method or quality. Hair loss is a natural characteristic of reindeer hide and will continue throughout the life of the product.

Available Sizes

Size M

• Minimum size approximately 60 x 75 cm
• Suitable for most English saddles
• Iberian and Baroque saddles
• Endurance saddles
• Many treeless saddle models

Size L

• Approximately 60 x 90 cm (sizes are approximate)
• Larger hides suitable for bigger saddle models, including larger endurance and Western saddles
• Typically feature a more even coat with fewer holes and tears than lower grades, although repairs and small natural imperfections may still be present
• May contain repaired sections and occasional micro-holes on the underside, which are normal characteristics of natural reindeer hide

A portion of the tail may still be attached to some hides.

Care Instructions

This hide is intended for outdoor use and can withstand normal equestrian conditions.

• If the hide becomes wet, allow it to dry slowly indoors at a low temperature.
• Brush gently with a soft brush if required.
• Shake regularly to remove dust, dirt, and loose debris.
• Hair shedding is normal and expected throughout the life of the hide.

For long-term storage, keep the hide in a cool environment such as a tack room, stable, garage, or cellar. Reindeer hide generally maintains its condition best when stored in cooler temperatures rather than in heated indoor environments.
