Why reindeer hide?

Reindeer hair has a unique hollow structure, with each hair containing air. This creates a lightweight but highly cushioned layer beneath the saddle, helping to distribute pressure while providing a soft interface against the horse’s back.

Reindeer hide has also performed particularly well in published saddle-pressure research. In a study comparing several saddle pad materials, reindeer fur was the only material tested that significantly reduced maximum overall force and improved pressure distribution at trot.

The dense coat also helps reduce friction and is naturally moisture repellent, making reindeer hide a particularly interesting material for use beneath the saddle.

What makes BARTL reindeer pads different?

BARTL uses carefully selected AAA-grade winter reindeer hide and a specialised tanning process developed to improve the hide’s resistance to horse sweat.

Importantly, BARTL doesn’t use lots of small pieces of hide stitched together within the weight-bearing area. The pads are also anatomically shaped with clearance along the spine.

Depending on the model, additional features include anti-slip surfaces, pockets for optional inserts and reinforcement in high-wear areas.

Which BARTL pad should I choose?

Half Pad
A simple and versatile option that sits neatly beneath the saddle. Available in two sizes and suitable for many dressage, jumping, Icelandic and general-purpose saddles.

Dressage Pad
A full dressage-shaped saddle pad with genuine reindeer hide throughout the saddle area, anatomical shaping and clear spinal clearance. A lovely option if you prefer the coverage and appearance of a traditional dressage pad.

Dressage Pad with Anti-Slip
Combines the full dressage shape and reindeer hide with an anti-slip surface to provide additional saddle stability.

Short-Flap Endurance Pad

Does reindeer hide shed?

Yes — a small amount of shedding is completely normal, but it really isn’t much.

You may occasionally notice a few hairs on your horse or tack, particularly when the pad is new.

Reindeer hairs are hollow, which contributes to their cushioning properties but also means the individual hairs can break if treated roughly. Avoid vigorous brushing, scrubbing, combing, crushing or standing on the hide.

With normal use and appropriate care, the amount of shedding is generally very small. The occasional loose hair is perfectly normal.

Is reindeer hide hot?

Despite reindeer’s rather chilly natural habitat, reindeer hide isn’t simply about creating warmth.

The hollow hairs trap air and create an insulating layer, while allowing air and moisture to move between the hairs. The hair itself is naturally moisture repellent, and BARTL specifically recommends its reindeer saddle pads for year-round use, including summer.

How much care does a BARTL pad need?

Not much!

After riding, simply shake off loose dirt and allow the pad to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area with the reindeer fur facing upwards.

If brushing is needed, use a soft brush and gently brush in the direction of the hair. Avoid coarse brushes and combs.

The hide can also occasionally be gently vacuumed on the lowest suction setting, working in the direction of the coat.

Can I wash my BARTL pad?

Yes.

BARTL reindeer products can be hand washed in warm water up to a maximum of 30°C when necessary.

Use a detergent specifically designed for hides or skins rather than ordinary laundry detergent.

After washing, allow the pad to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Don’t dry reindeer hide in direct sunlight, over a heater or using another direct heat source.
